What is the role of the School Board and what differences do you see with their role
versus the role of administration?
School Board (3yr):
David Sydow:
The school board should be setting a vision for the district, the administration should be implementing that vision.
Michelle Bronchuk:
The School Board should serve in an oversight capacity to ensure our school district is strong and providing a high quality of education to all of our children. The board should be ensuring that school funds are expended wisely to meet this goal. The board should also review areas that need improvement within the current system and ensure they are addressed. The role of administration should be to carry out the day to day execution of our school system operations and ensure a high standard of operational execution and excellence.
Jenna Hardy:
The role of the School Board is to ensure that everything that happens within a school district puts students first and prioritizes student achievement. The School Board's job is not to run the day-to-day affairs of the school district. That is the administration's job. However, the board is responsible to oversee and evaluate the administration in that process ensuring that student well-being and achievement are always the focus.
Kenneth Martin:
The school board's role is to work in collaboration with the superintendent in the best interests of our students. There is a common misunderstanding about what the school board is able to do. Many think it's job is to control and dictate all facets of daily operations in a school district. This is inaccurate. As issues arise and find their way to the board it is their job to discuss, explore and deliberate these issues with the guiding principle of "what is best for our students?". The superintendent runs the school district while the school board advises, challenges, supports and questions the superintendent and their decisions.
Chandra Miller:
The role of the School Board is to make decisions regarding protocols and evaluate the administration's ability to provide an exemplary education to the students. The administration is in charge of running the daily operations of the district and of researching, developing, and presenting new protocols or curriculums to the School Board. The School Board should always hold the students and their education as the first priority when discussing and making decisions from what is presented.
Lori Peters:
The role of the School Board is to act as the guardrails of the vision and mission of the school district. The School Board has final adjudication of success in meeting the vision and mission. Should a crisis or lack of competence arise, it is the responsibility of the School Board to roll up its sleeves and delve into the details to guide the school district through such difficulties. In regards to the budget, only the School Board has the final authority to make line-item changes to the budget once submitted by the administration. The administration is tasked with providing the strategic plan to achieve the mission and report to the School Board the success in doing so. The administration is also responsible for submitting a budget that is both fiscally responsible and accomplishes the mission for the current year and looking towards the future.
Scott Sabens:
The role of the school board is to provide direction, to set a vision, policies, goals, and expectations of the administration and then hold them accountable. The administration's role is to carry out the above and run day to day operations.
School Board (1yr):
Jaimie Von Schoen:
The school board should set the vision and goals for the school district, as well as hold the administration accountable for results. The school board should consist of members with different experience to ensure "out of the box" thinking but also be able to function and work together as a team. The administration should identify needs, develop policies and regulations, and manage day to day operations and the Superintendent should hold the staff accountable along with providing leadership.
Cinda Guagliumi:
Simply put, the school board's role is governance and the superintendent's role is administering the daily functions of the district. This is outlined well by the New Hampshire School Board Association (NHSBA)-> https://nhsba.org/school-board-governance-accountability/role-of-a-school-board-member/
Jennifer McCormack:
The Board should be champions of academic excellence and set the vision and goals for the District to achieve. The Board is responsible for selecting a superintendent capable of implementing that vision operationally and hold the administration accountable to measuring and reporting back how well they have done to meet district goals. This is an area that I believe the current board has fallen short. We need to elect new leadership to ensure the Board is actively evaluating the shortcomings in academics across the district and driving the path forward to excellence.
Rachel Paepke:
A school board will address matters regarding the setting of academic standards and work with administration / teachers / staff / students to ensure a safe and positive school environment. They should provide a vision/mission surrounding the education of our youth which prepares each student to progress from school to school, as well as being prepared to enter the community as a young adult after the completion of high school. The board reviews and/or implements district wide policies, as well as ensures the district has an infrastructure in place to retain our high-quality educators and support staff. Administration executes the daily operations of the district as well as handles the short- and long-term planning to meet the district goals. They are there to ensure the school administration, educators and staff have the resources required to meet the need of every student.
